Posts Tagged ‘pigeons killing’

I attended Jane Goodall’s talk the other day. She said she’ll be the voice for the voiceless until her body wears out. Same here. I’ll be the voice for the animals until my body wears out!

This happened about two hours ago. When a group of pigeons is being killed, pigeons from other areas fly and settle here. There is no over-population of pigeons in Singapore, they only congregate in certain areas.

The pigeons were struggling very hard to free themselves, unwilling to be trapped and killed. Just like us. Mdm Law reminded me, when humans are afraid of death, animals suffer as a result. It is always easy to blame.

In the process of trapping, one of the trappers said that I am mentally ill. I reported this to NParks. Believe me, there is no one you can trust when humans have killing on their mind. Today, those who kill are the good ones, those who save are seen as the bad ones.

I hope there will be more Jane Goodall in the future and the fight continues!

Again, I was looking for my community cats at the multistorey carpark and I saw familiar faces from NParks walking towards Blk 196, Kim Keat Avenue. I’ve never thought that they were here to trap the pigeons again because the last trapping was done in early July. Moreover, pigeons aren’t populous here.

NParks contractors baiting the pigeons to the trap by scattering food.
Pigeons refused to walk into the trap.

I took videos and photos as usual. No matter how hard  pigeons were baited into the trap, they refused to go in.

I could see the frustration coming from NParks. Unable to trap the pigeons, NParks called the police. The police had nothing on me simply because I was only filming and I have every right to film whatever I want.

The arrival of police car.

Being unable to trap the pigeons, they shifted the trap to Blk 195.

As you can see, there weren’t a lot of pigeons, yet NParks still proceeded to trap them. This made me realise that once again, our government has fooled the public into believing that one of the reasons for killing the pigeons is overpopulation!

NParks continued to move to another side of Blk 195. There were two pigeons whom I had noticed for a few days. One with its foot entangled with string and leaf stem, and the other with a broken wing.

Instead of helping the pigeons in need, they continue to kill.

In the video, the one who tried hard to escape the trap was the pigeon with its foot entangled with strings and leaf stem. The one with the broken wing simply collapsed next to it. It was so painful to watch and I cried hard while filming, and the humans were laughing at me. This made me realise that there truly are people with unkind hearts. A heart that wants and encourages others to kill.

NParks continued to move and set traps, but only two birds approached the food. Sensing something was not right, both flew away. With this, NParks ended their trapping for the day.

Instead of leaving, I caught two NParks staff moving up the multistorey car park where our community cats rest. Are they going to poison the cats like they did at Meiling Street? I don’t know. Nothing good can come from whatever they’re planning. I yelled at them to get lost and told them they were bringing shame to their parents by engaging in such work. This was the furthest I could go to tell them off. Always reminding myself not to curse anyone, though I was very, very angry—angry enough to feel like smacking all of them. But would doing that help? Unlikely… I would only injure my fist.

Since NParks failed to trap the pigeons at Blk 196, I believe they will need to come back to complete the trapping and killing. I hope that one day, I won’t have to film such videos ever again.

Just like any of us, the pigeons want to be happy as well. They definitely need food and water like us and I’ve seen them playing as well.

It was after a heavy downpour and a small pool of water had formed on the ground. Several pigeons dipped themselves into the water. Their happiness and safety are my happiness and safety… Sadly, they were rounded up by the authorities. Nothing was left but only wonderful memories of them teaching me to cherish life, be present and be strong.

We must understand the importance of coexistence!

Compassion is such a strong word that requires action than speech.

I’ve created a new category in this blog and named it “Love all wings”. Whatever activities that I’ve done for the pigeons, I wish to share it here. After witnessing the pigeons killing last month, the helplessness in me drove me to be a voice for the pigeons.

At first I thought I would start by creating some slides, then videos and post it everywhere so that people can understand pigeons.

However, two days ago, in Meiling street, two community cats had consumed poisonous food meant to use for the pigeons and in the end both passed on.

I started a petition today, demanding for an end to pigeon culling and it goes like this:

On the 4th of June, numerous pigeons, other birds, and two community cats were found dead at Blk 155 and 156, Mei Ling Street. The cats died horribly, gasping for life. It was clearly an act of pigeon culling. A resident witnessed a pest control worker spreading poisonous food with the intent to kill pigeons. Fortunately, no humans consumed the poison. The SPCA confirmed that the community cats’ deaths were due to the poison used for pigeons.

A similar incident occurred on the 24th of April, 2024, at Blk 195 Kim Keat Avenue. I witnessed an Indian man spreading poisonous food next to his pest control vehicle around 3 pm. Dead pigeons and those still struggling were swept into black plastic bags by cleaners. The man claimed to be acting on orders from the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council. Despite my emails to the Town Council, AVS, and the MP-in-charge, I have not received a reply.

The experience of witnessing these killings was distressing and traumatic. Such massive culling is frequent, notably at Jalan Tenteram, where ACRES confirmed the use of poison. Pigeons lack designated food sources and rely on human food. Bird feeders, fined for helping these birds, are unfairly punished, while those who kill them are rewarded. This sends the wrong message about our values and morals.

Covid-19 has killed over 7 million people, while diseases from pigeons have caused only 2 deaths worldwide. We must consider humane alternatives to control the pigeon population to prevent potential harm to children or other species.

Humane Alternatives for Pigeon Population Control:
1. Non-toxic Birth Control Methods:

Use corn-based feed containing nicarbazin, which has reduced the pigeon population outside Masjid Haji Muhammad Salleh mosque by 60-70% (Straits Times, 10 Nov 2016). Similar methods have been effective in Basel, Switzerland, and Barcelona, Spain.

2. Construction of Nesting Boxes or Platforms:

Install nesting boxes or platforms complemented by regular feeding and cleaning, as done in Paris. Eggs are replaced with dummy eggs to prevent hatching, leading to a gradual reduction in population and fewer issues related to droppings and damage.

3. Encourage Relocation of Pigeons:

Relocate pigeons to designated nature parks where their population can be managed. Plant trees like the Saga tree, Singapore Cherry, Banyan Tree, and papaya trees to provide food sources away from residential areas. Complement this with proper waste management and public education to keep our environment clean.

These methods enable humans to live in harmony with nature, aligning with our goal of being a city in nature. We urge the town councils to consider these humane and sustainable solutions in consultation with animal welfare groups such as ACRES, and government agencies like NEA, AVS NParks. Culling is a short-term solution that worsens the problem as the remaining birds breed more. Let’s adopt a more humane and sustainable approach.

There aren’t many signatures but lots of views and shares. I didn’t carry on sharing because the story was twisted to be rodent poisoning by the town council. What a swift change! And what can I do? Instead of apologising for poisoning 2 community cats, we were told to remove the cats around the area for the convenience of rodent poisoning. This is absolute arrogance!

*Thanks Melanie for helping with the petition!
