Blackie is the most gentle cat I have ever come across in my life. He never attacks me, not with his claws or anything. I always think that black cats are fierce and unfriendly and black cats are not to be messed with. Blackie proved me all wrong. Blackie is so gentle and loving. He didn’t seem to me to be a stray cos he didn’t seem to attack not only me but Monnie, Cashie and Puss.

Cashie is very playful. He always love touching Blackie’s tail. Blackie gets irritated but he never uses his claws on him. Puss is fierce enough, she attacked on Blackie and Blackie backed off. Mel and I wonder how did he going to survive on the street. Luckily he is a black cat. Many don’t disturb black cat.

Little Blackie wants some food.

I used to visualise Miemi and when I visualised Miemi, she was always running and playing with a few cats and one of the cat was a black cat. I dislike black cat so I imagined the black cat to be a white cat but whenever I visualised it into a white cat, the black cat kept appearing and still I couldn’t accept a black cat was with Miemi.

One afternoon when I was shutting my bedroom window. I felt a cat jumping on my bed and I was sure it was Miemi. I looked at the reflection on my Hi-Fi player and I saw a black cat walking pass me on the bed. I thought to myself, that was not Miemi cos Miemi was not a black cat, she is a beautiful tabby white cat. So I blushed the thought away, telling myself it was my imagination.

After two weeks, Mel and I engaged an animal communicator. She told me that Miemi has a cat friend who is black in colour, it’s a black cat. I was like “what”, cos I didn’t tell the animal communicator that I saw the black cat on my bed in my house. I was told by the animal communicator that Miemi had brought friends home to show me. I love Miemi!

After this, I have changed my perception towards a black cat. I began to love black cats. Miemi taught me to love black cats. Daddy, the stray cat in Hougang, he is loving too. The cat that was hit by a car in the car park, he was a black cat too. Perhaps Miemi wants me to help the black cats.

Blackie needs to remove his stitches this Wednesday. I hope to release him this Wednesday. I bought a collar for Blackie and Puss. Hopefully to send a message to everybody that both cats are taken care of and please do not abuse them.

So how is Puss today? Puss is a big bully in my house today. She even beats Blackie. Cashie, Monnie and Blackie are afraid of her. Look at this sweet little queen on my bed.

She should be recovering. I can see new skin formed on her feet. I will check again tomorrow before I remove the collar from her. I have to make sure that it does not bleed after she licks on it. If she is ok, I will released her tomorrow night.

To write this blog is just like adding salt to my wound that has not healed yet. Yet I decided to write this especially for pet owners whose cats are suffering from cancer.

My friend, Mel and I thought Animal Recovery Veterinary Centre is a top animal hospital in Singapore. Despite the good reviews we read in the forum, we found out through the hard way that this is not true.

We brought our beloved cat to the centre as she was suffering from cancer. We spent lots of money on their recommended remedy, shanhuang, which cost about $180. It tasted and smelt so awful that my cat spit it out violently and formed foam in her mouth. We only did two ultrasounds and we trusted the diagnosis that she was suffering from lymphoma. We were told that Miemi’s type of cancer is easily treatable and she was in good hands with a high chance of recovery.

Subsequently, everything else happened in a blur. Miemi was given weekly chemo injections without any checks on whether her body could take it. The ‘checks’ were only based on my observations on how she was doing. Eventually, Miemi’s condition deteriorated and we brought her back to the vet. The vet didn’t even examine her. She didn’t even dispense her any medicine to ease the pain. She pronounced Miemi’s death sentence just like that. Eventually we had to call another vet from another clinic to euthanise her as ARVC doesn’t offer such services. We then learnt that Miemi was suffering from an infection. Blood tests should also be done to check on her health status before chemo injections are administered. We also learnt that it is inaccurate to diagnose the cancer type just by observation. Every cancer type has its protocol. Thanks to good advice, we managed to nurse Miemi back to health and had earned back some time o spend with her.

I remember the notice which was hung on the wall of ARVC, there is one clause that says “please do not embarrass yourself by asking for discount”. “Yourself” refers to “the customers”. To me it is an embarrassment to see such a sign hanging on the wall. It doesn’t look professional at all.

Below was an email sent to Dr Ly by us:

Dear Dr Jean-Paul,

My cat, Miemi Lee, was diagnosed by Dr Sabine two months ago with lymphoma. She saw you once before Dr Lee took over and gave her weekly chemo injections. However, Miemi’s health got worse and during her last visit on 4 Jan 13, Dr Angeline diagnosed that she would not last long and did not give her any medical treatment neither did she try to save her. My cat is just like a family member to me and I would not spare any expense on her health. Your clinic claims to be managed by professionals but I am very upset by the treatment that Miemi received at your centre. I am writing to you to seek clarification on your clinic’s medical protocol and doctors’ diagnosis of Miemi’s illness.

Dr Sabine diagnosed Miemi based on ultrasound scans. However, no biopsy was made. I understand that different cancer types have different treatment methods. On what basis did Dr Sabine base her diagnosis upon?

Miemi had 7 chemo injections. She was getting significantly weaker in her last two injections. However, no blood test was done throughout her chemo treatment. On what basis was Dr Lee sure that Miemi could take the shots and that the chemo was not too strong for her?

Dr Angeline examined Miemi when she was very weak on 4 Jan 13. She did not do a thorough examination of her. Instead, I was told that Miemi would not live long because Miemi’s body temperature was 35.1 degree Celsius and i was told by Dr Angeline that Miemi was unable to regulate her body temperature. She dispensed her with some L-lysine supplement and gave her a jab only when i requested her to give Miemi something. My question is – does the fact that Miemi has cancer mean that it would be certain that she would die? Why did Dr Angeline give up on her so easily?

I have trusted the good reviews of Animal Recovery Centre and have paid a lot of money for Miemi’s treatment. However, my experience tells me otherwise.

Looking forward to your reply.

May Lee and family

Below was the reply from Dr Ly a week after the email:

Dear May Lee,

Please accept my apologies for the delay with my reply.
It is unfortunate that you are unhappy with the level service which was provided for Miemi.

With regards to your queries, the diagnosis was based on clinical signs and ultrasound investigation by our very experienced ultrasonographer, Dr Sabine Bozon.
She is a recognized authority in Europe and not all suspected tumors can be easily biopsied such as brain or intestinal tumors, without an invasive surgical approach.
However, in the case of Miemi, she was too sick to undergo any surgical intervention.
Based on the strong ultrasonographic evidence we offered to try low dose chemotherapy to see if she would respond.
Lymphoma in cats ia the most common and frequent reasons for enlarged lymph nodes and intestines, together with thickening of intestinal lining.
The age of Miemi, her clinical symptoms and the ultrasound findings, point towards feline lymphoma.
As we cannot take the risk of waiting or taking the biopsy surgically, we opted to try low does vincristine and wait for a response.
Fortunately your cat responded favourably, confirming our suspicions,.

You must realize, we have not found a cure for cancer either in animals or humans.
Lymphoma can be controlled in our experience, with low dose vincristine and immune modulating supplements but relapses can be expected in 50% of our patients and often relapses tend to be terminal.
We can only try our best and if any second opinion is required, we will gladly refer all our patients’ records to other vets for treatment.
We obtain our degrees formally, through universities, our work experiences and continuous education. We do not consider the internet as a source of reliable information or worthy of us getting our training from.

During the last visit, Dr Yang saw that Miemi’s condition was very advanced and as a holistic practice, we take into consideration the feelings and suffering of our patients.
Therefor, it was felt at that time that no more treatment would be given as Miemi was already very weak and so we gave her some vitamins to help her and explained in full to you, about the seriousness of the illness at that time.
Dr Yang felt that death was imminent and Miemi was certainly suffering.

Although we are highly trained, we are not flawless and I myself make multiple mistakes in my life, but we try with all our skills to help our patients, sometimes even if it is for just another day.
However, we find it difficult to standby if we know our patient has a terminal illness and is reaching that point quickly while suffering.
As we cannot take matters into our own hands, we can only advise.

If there has been any miscommunication, I apologize but the fact still remains that Miemi has a serious condition and requires a humane decision to help her in her terminal illness.
Thank you for taking the time to contact me and I hope this answers your queries.

Kind regards,
Dr Jean-Paul Ly
Director Animal Recovery Veterinary Center

In the end, Dr Ly never explain to us why Miemi was never taken any blood test during all her chemo injection.

Miemi was still strong before she had her chemo injection.

*An advice to those who are sending their cats for chemotherapy: Please ensure that your cats do a blood test before the chemo injections. Taking blood tests is a must before chemo injection to ensure that the cats are able to take the shot.

Today, Dr Ly from Animal Recovery Veterinary Centre still owes us an explanation.

Meet the new cat on my block, Blackie. He came from nowhere and seems hungry every time. Every time after feeding Queenie and the rest and if there is leftover food, I would feed some of the strays below my block.

I have never seen Blackie before and i notice that he is always hungry and talkative. He talks even with the food in his mouth, down the throat and when he finishes his food. He always makes funny noises and is very cute.

He recognises me always and follows me even when I don’t have food for him. I tried not to miss him when I was feeding the rest. Blackie was such a good boy that I don’t want any harm to come to him. So I arranged with the Cat’s Welfare Society to have him spayed.

It costs only $28 to spay him and through CWS I am able to reimburse $20. However, the total bill came out to be $233, just because of very small stitches on his head, Mel and I had to pay another $205. WOW!

We have no regrets bringing Blackie to the vet. I just felt that the bill could be less, especially kind-hearted people like Mel and I and the rest are doing out of good will to help many helpless little strays.

My suggestion to Mel is not to go back to Island Vet for the strays unless for serious cases. Island Vet is an excellent vet clinic, however, I don’t quite agree with how they charge. Animal Recovery Veterinary Centre is even worst. Mount Pleasant Hospital next. Bad vets over at Mount Pleasant Hospital. Oh… Some unpleasant incidents happened with Miemi’s treatment over at Animal Recovery Veterinary Centre, I think it is time for me to share my experiences in my next blog.

Little Blackie in the cage.

Yes, can’t really see him. Will take a clearer picture next time.

He isn’t used to the cage and didnt like to be caged. He struggled a lot yesterday but eventually gave way. He is eating well. Going to cook for him now. Don’t want to see him going hungry.

Miemi has been around with me these few nights. I smiled and greeted her even though I was tired. It is always a joy to know that she is around…always. Photos of her when she was a baby.

20130726-122840.jpg

I remember it was around 10+ that night. I was going to bed and I put her on the couch on this neck cushion. It fitted her well. When I woke up the next morning, I took a peep at her and there she was still lying still on the neck cushion. She meowed immediately when she noticed me. Miemi was such good girl.

Miemi at a playful age. I think she was about one to two months old. I had no experience in handling or taking care of cats when she first came to me. I gave her dry cat food and she didn’t seem to know how to eat. So i smashed the dry food and mixed with wet food for her. She ate finally.

She had an accident when she was in her eighth or tenth month. I think someone dragged her out from my window, she fell and broke her leg and was dumped on the fourth floor. We were staying on the tenth floor. She was obviously exposed in the middle of the stairs. Injured cats never expose themselves. They usually hide but Miemi did not. She couldn’t walk as she broke her bone on her front left foot. I went stair by stair shouting her name and looking for her. Finally I saw her and she lifted her neck high when she saw me.

I knew she couldn’t have broken her leg and dragged herself to the fourth floor. Someone dragged her out of my window, felt panicked and dumped her. I don’t know who did it. Whoever did it was forgiven. Animals never hold grudges. Miemi never and so shouldn’t I.

I had bad arthritis when I was 18. It was on my joint. Both my knees, ankles and wrists. I got better as I grew older. At the age of 24, they were 99% healed without medication except for my left wrist. It is always painful when I add stress to it. Just like Miemi, after her operation, she was able to walk normally but she could not bend her leg anymore.

It is not easy for me to forget which leg she injured herself cos my left wrist reminded me of her. The last time I felt sensitive on my left wrist was two weeks ago. I thought of Miemi. Part of me was sad because she was not with me physically anymore and part of me was happy because she no longer feels pain anymore. She is free of pain whereas I am still suffering.

This was taken when she was eight-months-old. How graceful she was! There was no ipad at that time and digital cameras were rather expensive.

Sometimes I asked myself did I love her all my life. I think I have I neglected her during her first few months and I loved her her whole life. Never once have I thought of abandoning her even though letter was sent from HDB to send her away and friend told me to give her up. I never did. She was and is a flawless jade to me.

I also remember there was an earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia. One night, both of us felt the aftermath of an earthquake and we looked at each other. Without hesitation, I picked her up and dashed out of the house, just in case the building collapsed. I didn’t wear my bra as I needed to dash both of us out of the building and I used Miemi as a shield. Carrying her tightly, afraid that she might run away and go missing but she stuck closely to me without struggling.

Not even a second have I thought of abandoning her. I walked with her when she was ill. Nothing could tear us apart. Nothing. Yes, the connection between Miemi and I is never ending. A never ending love. We will be together again. She walked with me her whole life and she still chooses to walk with me. So do I.

Beautiful purple chrysanthemums for Miemi. Cashie was playful again trying to pull out the leaves but he is still lovely.

Always loving Miemi.
