Mel wanted to bake her first cake for her cousin’s birthday and I promised to teach her. It was a on a Saturday two weeks ago. She nearly forgotten about it. We baked the cake in the evening.
She was a good student. She listened to what I said. She made a little mistake here and there and was a little clumsy as usual:).
We took about two to two and a half hours to bake the sponge cake. Mel did very well in her first attempt. She washed all baking tools and it was the most relaxing baking day for me as I did not have to wash anything. I only gave instructions.
After the sponge was ready, we allowed it to cool. While it was cooling, we started preparing the chocolate mousse. Making chocolate mousse wasn’t easy. It takes some time to do it. Mel did as she was told obediently:). I could see the excitement on her face.
After the mousse was done, we needed to slice the cake into layers and spread the mousse on every layer, on the sides as well as the top. Mel loved this part alot. She seemed to have a wonderful time spreading it. I should say she enjoyed playing with it.
After spreading them, we left the cake to cool in the fridge. I could see that Mel was tired then. We went to bed slightly past 11p.m. We were exhausted as we started baking around 5 p.m. It was a long and meaningful evening for us.
The next morning, since we did not have a box to place the cake, we decided to go to Phoon Huat to get all the necessities. Phoon Huat opens at 9a.m. We had enough time to get what we wanted. We needed items to decorate the cake. At the end, we bought boxes for the cake. A “Happy Birthday” sign was placed on the cake and I decided to decorate strawberries on it since we were running out of time.
When we got back home, I whipped the cream, added some melted chocolate to make it into a chocolate whipped cream. Taught Mel how to use a nozzle to decorate it. She was able to do this well.
As there wasn’t any fresh strawberries at Phoon Huat, we got it at Mel’s place. Quickly, we went up to her place and sliced the strawberries and decorated them on top of the cake. This was the cake that she baked.
She was so contented with it though it was a simple cake and believed that her cousin would love it. She thanked me for it and we agreed to bake a log cake for our families this christmas.
Her cousin said it tasted and looked great!
Of course! I am also a good baking instructor:p.
OH! It was a chocolate mousse cake!
